The Waterfall

Standing 30 meters tall, it is the most spectacular waterfall in the Lot: a breathtaking and refreshing site in the heart of a lush cirque. It’s accessible via a 1.2-kilometer shaded trail from the village, ideal for a summer stroll. Designated a sensitive natural area, the site offers a splendid panorama, especially after rain, when the waterfall flows more abundantly.

St. Peter’s Church

Built between the late 11th and early 12th centuries, it formed, together with the seigneurial castle, the village’s first fortified complex. Built in the Romanesque style, it is distinguished by its dome and its richly carved decoration featuring modillions, capitals, and columns.

The Castle of the Lords of Autoire

The castrum once formed a medieval U-shaped complex centered around an inner courtyard. Today, the main western wing remains, notable for its limestone masonry and the grandeur of its architecture.

💡 Tip: If you’re up for the challenge and well-equipped, you can follow the Autoire Gorge trail (5.6 km – approx. 2.5 hours), which offers a superb hike through a spectacular landscape of limestone cliffs, dominated by the “Château des Anglais” and the famous waterfall. This gorge, carved into the Gramat plateau, reveals a unique geological landscape and a preserved ecosystem designated as a Sensitive Natural Area.

Loubressac – Travel time: 10 min

Ranked among the “Most Beautiful Villages of France,” Loubressac overlooks the Dordogne Valley. Its cobblestone streets and golden-stone houses invite visitors to stroll through the village in a peaceful and authentic atmosphere.

Church of St. John the Baptist (14th century)

It is distinguished by its vast two-bay nave flanked by side chapels and a five-sided choir with ribbed vaulting. Its imposing bell tower, accessed by a spiral staircase with a circular vault, dominates the complex. The adjoining sacristies and architectural details bear witness to the Gothic craftsmanship of the era.

Loubressac Castle

Built in the 14th century by Adhémar d’Aigrefeuille, it overlooks the village. Originally the residence of the barons and later a manor house in the 19th century, it features a blend of architectural styles reflecting its successive owners. Now privately owned, it is not open to the public.

The Maday Bridge

Designated a Historic Monument, it is the oldest bridge in the region. Dating from the 14th century, it spans the Bave River on the old pilgrims’ route to Rocamadour, with its three arches, one of which is the original pointed arch.

Back to Les Hauts de Sauliès – Travel time: 58 min

💡Our tip

Be sure to book your tour of the Gouffre de Padirac several days in advance, especially in July and August. Start your day as soon as the site opens to avoid the crowds and fully enjoy the underground tour. After lunch, take some time to stroll through the narrow streets of Autoire before heading to its waterfall if you’d like to cool off. End the day in Loubressac in the late afternoon: the light there is particularly beautiful and offers magnificent panoramic views of the surrounding valleys. If you enjoy hiking, the Autoire Gorge trail is a superb addition to this excursion.
