This itinerary invites you to discover three of Occitanie’s most beautiful medieval towns, including hilltop villages, Cathar fortresses, and the spectacular landscapes of the Aveyron Gorges. Less than an hour from Les Hauts de Sauliès, this excursion offers a wonderful getaway from the Lot region, perfect for travelers who love history, cultural heritage, and photography.
The day begins in Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val, one of the oldest medieval towns in southwestern France. Nestled in the heart of the Aveyron Valley, it immediately charms visitors with its cobblestone streets, historic houses, abbey, and famous medieval market hall. Its Sunday market, considered one of the most beautiful in the region, brings the squares and terraces to life with an authentic atmosphere.
You will then visit the fortress of Penne, an impressive castle perched on a rocky outcrop overlooking the Aveyron Gorges. A former Cathar stronghold, it bears witness to several centuries of military history and today offers a remarkable tour through the heart of an exemplary restoration project. From its ramparts, the panoramic views of the valley are among the most spectacular in Occitanie.
The itinerary finally continues on to Cordes-sur-Ciel, named one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France. Founded in the 13th century, this medieval town captivates visitors with its Gothic palaces, sculpted facades, and cobblestone streets that seem to rise toward the sky. When mist envelops the valley in the early morning, the village appears to float above the clouds—a sight that has earned it its poetic name.
This tour will appeal to lovers of medieval heritage, architecture, Cathar history, and stunning landscapes. It also complements the itineraries dedicated to the major sites of the Lot region, allowing visitors to discover the full cultural richness of Occitanie.

The Day’s Schedule
Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val – Travel time: 58 min
Nestled in the “Noble Valley,” between the cliffs of the Roc d’Anglars and the Aveyron and Bonnette rivers, Saint-Antonin-Noble-Val is one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Occitanie. Founded around a Benedictine abbey in the 8th century, the town prospered thanks to the leather and wool trade, and today it retains its medieval architecture and picturesque narrow streets.
Its Sunday market, held under the 12th-century market hall, carries on a centuries-old commercial tradition and brings the heart of the village to life. Among the treasures to discover are the 13th-century Saint-Antonin Church with its remarkable wood carvings, as well as the medieval bridge over the Aveyron River—a true postcard image of this historic town.
Penne Fortress – Travel time: 15 min
Overlooking the Aveyron Valley, the fortress of Penne was built in the late 13th century on the ruins of an ancient Cathar castrum that had belonged to the Lords of Penne. A refuge during the Albigensian Crusade, it bears witness to a rich military and spiritual past.
Its defense towers, fortified gatehouse, seigneurial residence, state room, and medieval cistern offer a fascinating glimpse into seigneurial life. Destroyed in the 17th century and restored since 2006, the fortress has been reborn thanks to ambitious renovation efforts and now welcomes visitors for tours and summer events.
Hours: 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Wednesday through Friday)
Cordes sur Ciel – Travel time: 30 min
Perched on a rocky outcrop, Cordes-sur-Ciel is an exceptional medieval town founded in the 13th century. Once a thriving merchant town, it still boasts magnificently carved Gothic palaces, symbols of its golden age. In its cobblestone alleys, fantastical beasts, St. James symbols, and alchemical symbols tell the legend of this town suspended between heaven and earth.
Gothic Houses
The Gothic Houses Tour invites you to take a walking tour in the footsteps of the medieval builders. Designed by the Tourist Office, it highlights the different stages of Gothic architecture, from the Early Gothic to the Flamboyant style, and allows visitors to discover the legendary and poetic heritage of Cordes-sur-Ciel.
Among the architectural gems are the Maison du Grand Fauconnier, the Maison du Grand Écuyer, and the Maison du Grand Veneur, famous for their carved facades. The latter, designated a Historic Monument, features a remarkable hunting scene carved from sandstone—a masterpiece of Gothic art. Tourist Office Hours: Daily from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Back to Les Hauts de Sauliès – Travel time: 1 hr 25 min
