Visit Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, Pech Merle, and the Château de Cénevières: The Must-See Itinerary in the Lot

If you could only take one excursion during your stay in the Lot, this would undoubtedly be the one.

In just one day, this itinerary takes you to three of the department’s greatest treasures: the prehistoric cave of Pech Merle, world-famous for its cave paintings dating back more than 20,000 years, the village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, named one of the Most Beautiful Villages of France, and the Renaissance castle of Cénevières, which majestically overlooks the Lot Valley.

Starting from Les Hauts de Sauliès, this tour has been designed to minimize travel time while offering you a particularly enriching day. You’ll journey from the fascinating depths of the underground world to the hilltop medieval streets of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, before concluding your exploration in the elegant setting of a Renaissance mansion that has been home to the same family for several centuries.

This itinerary will appeal to history buffs as well as lovers of cultural heritage, photography, and natural landscapes. The panoramic views of the Lot Valley are among the most beautiful in the region, while the limestone cliffs, stone villages, and the river come together to create a scene typical of the Quercy region.

Easily done in a day, this excursion is an excellent introduction to the Lot region. It allows you to discover three complementary facets of the area: prehistory at Pech Merle, the Middle Ages at Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, and the Renaissance at the Château de Cénevières. A true immersion in more than twenty millennia of history, set in the heart of a preserved natural environment.

Church of Saint-Cirq Lapopie

Dedicated to Saint Cyr—a young martyr from Tarsus—and to Saint Julitte, his mother, whose name is the origin of the place name “Cirq” in Saint-Cirq-Lapopie, this Gothic church overlooks the village from its rocky promontory. Construction began in 1522, and the church incorporated the former 12th-century Romanesque parish church, several remarkable elements of which it still preserves.
Hours: open to the public.

Lapopie Rock

At the highest point of the cliff, La Popie—a rocky outcrop overlooking the Lot River—was home to the site’s first fortified castle, built in the 10th century and later remodeled in the 12th. This strategic promontory once controlled the valley and the river crossing, forming the heart of Saint-Cirq’s feudal power. Free access from the historic center.
